Faith Over Law

In this sermon, the pastor explores the relationship between faith, law, and grace as explained in Romans 4, emphasizing how faith is the key to experiencing the grace of God.

The message begins by addressing a common struggle in churches today—a misunderstanding of how to transition from living under the law to living in grace. Many either live under strict legalism, trying to follow a set of rules, or they misinterpret grace as a license to do whatever they please. However, the Bible teaches that faith is what leads us to grace. Faith in Christ allows us to move beyond the law and into the fullness of God’s grace, rather than being trapped in either extreme.

To illustrate this, the pastor references Abraham—a figure revered in Jewish tradition. Abraham lived before the Mosaic Law was given, yet he was still considered righteous. How? By faith. Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousness because he trusted God and obeyed Him, even before the written law existed. This proves that righteousness comes through faith, not by works of the law.

The pastor explains that if our inheritance from God was based on obeying the law perfectly, none of us would receive anything from Him—because no one is capable of following the law flawlessly. Our thoughts, distractions, and personal struggles show how easily we fall short. This is why the law was never meant to save us; instead, it was given to reveal our sin and show us our need for grace. The law exposes our flaws, much like a teacher grading a test, but it does not provide the solution—grace does.

Despite this, the pastor makes it clear that the law is not abolished. Jesus Himself said that He did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it. Living under grace does not mean we can ignore God’s commandments; rather, it means that our obedience is now motivated by faith and love, not by obligation or fear.

The sermon then shifts to a personal testimony, illustrating how God’s guidance sometimes doesn’t make sense in the moment. The pastor recounts times of frustration and uncertainty in his journey, when doors seemed to close, and he questioned God’s plan. However, in hindsight, those closed doors were preparing him for a greater purpose—leading him to become the pastor of the church. This is a powerful example of what it means to have faith in God even when circumstances seem hopeless.

Using Abraham’s unwavering faith as an example, the pastor highlights Romans 4:18, which says that Abraham “against hope believed in hope.” Even when it seemed impossible for Abraham and Sarah to have a child, Abraham continued to trust God’s promise. Likewise, faith means trusting God even when we don’t understand His plan.

The message concludes with a powerful call to action: put your faith in Christ. The pastor emphasizes that our efforts alone cannot make us better Christians. Instead, when we place our faith in Christ, our desires change naturally—we no longer crave sin, just as filling up on nourishing food removes the appetite for junk food. By staying close to God, we experience His grace in abundance, and our lives are transformed.

Final takeaway:

Stop trying to fix yourself—just believe in Jesus. Faith leads to grace, and grace transforms us. Trust in Him fully, and you will experience the incredible benefits of living in God’s grace.
