Simple Christian Living
The message draws from Nehemiah 1 and emphasizes how ordinary believers, not just pastors or church leaders, are called to serve God in their everyday lives. Nehemiah, a cupbearer for the king, was not a priest, prophet, or Levite. He was an ordinary working professional, yet God placed a burden on his heart to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. This passage challenges us to see that serving God is not limited to ministry roles—it is for every believer, no matter their profession.
Be Exceptional in Your Work
The Christian life is not about separating work from faith but excelling in all we do to glorify God. Whether one is a mechanic, chef, landscaper, or business owner, the goal should be to work with excellence so that others see God in our diligence and character. Nehemiah demonstrated this in his work as a cupbearer, maintaining professionalism and a good attitude even in difficult circumstances.
Be Sensitive to God’s Calling
Nehemiah had likely never seen Jerusalem, yet when he heard of its destruction, he was deeply burdened. He didn’t have the skills of a builder, but God called him to step up in faith. Many Christians hesitate to serve because they feel unqualified, but throughout scripture, God uses the unqualified—Moses, David, Gideon, Peter, and Paul. What matters is being available for God’s work.
Be a Person of Prayer
Nehemiah’s immediate response to the burden in his heart was prayer. He fasted and sought God’s guidance before taking action (Nehemiah 1:4-11). Even when the king asked him what he wanted, Nehemiah prayed quickly before answering (Nehemiah 2:4). His reliance on prayer teaches us that true Christian living involves constantly seeking God’s direction.
Know and Live by God’s Word
Nehemiah’s prayer included references to God’s commandments and promises to Moses, showing that he was knowledgeable in scripture. Christians today should not rely on vague signs but instead let God’s Word be the guiding light for their decisions (Psalm 119:105). A deep understanding of the Bible shapes our perspective, strengthens our faith, and directs our actions.
Serve God Wherever You Are
The message concludes with a powerful reminder: Christian service is not about quitting jobs to enter full-time ministry; it is about serving God wherever we are. Whether through cooking, working in sound ministry, or leading in various capacities, every believer has a role in God’s kingdom. Nehemiah wasn’t a builder, but because he was willing and obedient, God equipped him for the task.
In just 52 days, Nehemiah led the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls—an extraordinary feat for someone with no experience. His story proves that a simple yet powerful Christian life consists of four things:
1. Doing your job with excellence
2. Being sensitive to God’s calling
3. Being committed to prayer
4. Living by and applying God’s Word
The simple life of Christianity is not about position or title—it’s about obedience, faithfulness, and a willingness to be used by God. Let’s serve God with what we have, where we are.
