New Year New Attitude
In this sermon on Philippians 3, the speaker reflects on the importance of cultivating a Christ-centered attitude as we step into the new year, 2025. Drawing from personal experiences, including mentoring moments with fellow pastors, the message emphasizes the necessity of aligning our lives with God’s purpose rather than pursuing personal ambitions or societal validation.
The speaker begins by discussing the natural uncertainty many feel at various stages of life, from young adulthood to older age, and underscores the importance of entering a new year with a vision rooted in God rather than self. Vision, he explains, must be God-focused to avoid becoming skewed by personal ambition. However, even when guided by a God-given vision, life may not always unfold as planned, as demonstrated by Paul in Philippians 3.
Paul’s example is highlighted, particularly his words from prison near the end of his life. Despite facing death for following Christ, Paul exhorts believers to “rejoice in the Lord.” This perspective stems not from external circumstances but from the unchanging nature of God’s presence and blessings. The speaker encourages the audience to adopt this same attitude of rejoicing, especially when faced with difficulties, emphasizing that a relationship with Christ provides an eternal source of joy.
The sermon identifies four specific attitudes that believers should embrace in the new year:
1. An Attitude of Rejoicing: Regardless of external challenges—financial struggles, low energy, or personal difficulties—believers are called to find joy in the Lord, who is constant and faithful. The speaker emphasizes that this joy is not contingent on circumstances but rooted in Christ’s eternal presence.
2. An Attitude of Confidence in God: The message warns against placing confidence in personal achievements or the flesh, instead advocating trust in God. Using examples from Scripture, such as David’s confidence in facing Goliath and the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, the speaker reminds listeners of the power of trusting God over oneself.
3. An Attitude of Moving Forward: Paul’s exhortation to forget what lies behind and press toward the mark for the prize of God’s high calling is presented as a model for living. Holding onto past failures or successes hinders progress, and the speaker urges the audience to release past burdens and pursue a genuine relationship with God.
4. An Attitude of Living for Eternity: Finally, the sermon calls believers to focus on heavenly priorities rather than earthly distractions. Using an analogy of choosing between McDonald’s fries and a steak dinner, the speaker illustrates the importance of living for something greater than temporary pleasures. This eternal mindset shapes a life of legacy, where believers invest in others and glorify God through their actions.
The overarching theme of the message is transformation through Christ, encouraging believers to surrender their lives fully to God in gratitude for His ultimate sacrifice. The speaker concludes by urging everyone to embrace these attitudes as they enter the new year, leaving behind old mindsets and striving for a closer walk with God in 2025.
