Inexcusable
In this sermon from Romans 2, Pastor explores the themes of God’s righteousness, judgment, and the believer’s responsibility to live an authentic Christian life. He begins by highlighting Paul’s purpose in the book of Romans: to outline the gospel while demonstrating God’s righteousness. Using the analogy of a white shirt against a new white backdrop, Pastor illustrates how God’s purity reveals human imperfection. Reflecting on Romans 1, he reminds listeners how Gentiles fell into sin and apostasy, and how God allows people to pursue their choices but holds them accountable for the consequences.
In Romans 2, Paul addresses the religious Jews, who assumed their religious practices exempted them from judgment. Pastor emphasizes the key verse, “Therefore, thou art inexcusable, O man,” underscoring that no one is immune to God’s judgment. He warns against self-righteousness and judging others, particularly when one is guilty of similar faults, and illustrates this with personal anecdotes about the dangers of hypocrisy in the church and Christian life.
Pastor reminds listeners that Christianity is not about outward rituals or appearances but about a genuine heart relationship with God. Paul’s admonition to the Jews applies to all believers: God’s judgment is impartial, and everyone is held accountable for their actions. Referencing Matthew 7, Pastor emphasizes that Christians must examine themselves first, removing the “beam” from their own eyes before addressing the “splinter” in someone else’s.
A central theme of the sermon is the importance of patient continuance in doing good, as described in Romans 2:7. Pastor challenges believers to remain faithful even during hardships, seeking glory, honor, and immortality by focusing on God’s eternal kingdom rather than temporary, earthly gains. He warns against living on the boundaries of sin and encourages obedience that flows from a heart of love for God, not fear of judgment.
Pastor also emphasizes God’s impartiality, quoting Romans 2:11: “For there is no respect of persons with God.” This truth highlights that God’s judgment applies equally to all, regardless of status, race, or position in life. Pastor cautions against the false assurance that church attendance or religious activities equate to salvation, reminding listeners that God looks at the heart, not external actions.
In conclusion, Pastor urges believers to live authentically, avoid hypocrisy, and focus on a heart-driven relationship with God. By aligning their actions with their faith, Christians can glorify God in all they do, living as true examples of His love and grace to those around them.
